Effects of Cyanide on the Protoplasm of Ameba

چکیده

The experiments seem to indicate that the toxicity of HCN and KCN for amebae is due to their effect on the cell membrane and not on the internal protoplasm. Concentrated solutions (N/10-N/300) of HCN or KCN produce an initial increase in viscosity of the protoplasm of amebae (immersed) which is followed by liquefaction and disintegration of the cell. Dilute solutions of HCN or KCN decrease the viscosity of the protoplasm of amebae. Injections of HCN or KCN into amebae produce a reversible decrease in viscosity of the protoplasm.

Negative effects of cyanide on health and its removal options from industrial wastewater

Water resource scarcity, population growth, pollution of surface and groundwater by discharging toxic wastewater and subsequent diseases may raise the necessity of reusing and treatment of wastewater. Cyanide is one of the toxic materials which can be found in some industrial wastewaters. Strict laws set by international bodies have forced industries to work on developing efficient cyanide remo...

Enhanced aldolase activity and glycolysis as short term effects of hydrogen cyanide for the release of dormancy in walnut kernels

Seed dormancy removal by cold stratification is accompanied by the development of gluconeogenic competence. Although hydrogen cyanide can stimulate the germination of many herbaceous dormant seeds and increase gluconeogenesis in long term, its short-term effects on sugar metabolism require further investigation. Accordingly, an experiment in the form of complete randomized design was carried ou...

Evaluation of some Enzymatic Changes in the Liver and Kidney of Rats Following Exposure to Sublethal Concentration of Potassium Cyanide

Background: Besides acute lethal cyanide poisoning, its chronic intoxication may also produce some pathologic effects on different tissues that precedes alterations in biochemical parameters. The present study was aimed to evaluate the effects of sublethal cyanide exposure on some tissue enzyme activities in liver and kidney of rats. Methods: Twelve male rats were divided into two groups as ...

Micrurgical Studies in Cell Physiology

The quiescence, rounding, sinking of the granules, and paling of the nucleus are similar to the effects seen after the injection of potassium and sodium chloride (11). Since the sodium salts of the anions were used, it might be inferred that the sodium is the active agent in the injected solutions. This is not entirely the case, however, for the effective concentrations of NaCl required are man...
